I would like to be able to link one record to another from the 'Related List' view so it's easy for users to see and add linked records.

I love the related list views, and find the additional displayed very helpful.

However, in order to create a new link to an existing record (from detail view) you must display the field and edit the record to add it.

When the 'add a new record' is also visible in the display list, this is confusing to users, as they think either 1) add new means create a new link OR 2) they only way they can link is to create a new record, which could result in bad/duplicate data.
